Hello. We are Ken & Darcy Searl from Roswell, Georgia. We met at a Financial Planning Conference with one of our early dates on Ken's 32 Marinette. We knew early that being on the water would always be something we both loved. We have a Financial Planning Business and plan to continue working and servicing clients while we travel. We both have three children from former marriages with the last one off to College in the Fall, thus "Just Us". We also have five grandchildren. The "Great Loop" has been a dream of ours for sometime and now that we are empty nesters "so-to-speak", it is our time. We have been boating for many years with Ken having his first boat at age 14. Darcy grew up on the Louisiana Bayou with her dad's shrimping business. Our boating experience until March, 2004 had mostly been confined to the closed-end waters on Lake Lanier. We knew that in order to make this adventure happen we would have to sell off all existing boats and toys and other properties(Kids and Grandkids Not Happy). Since March of 2005 we have been on the Tennessee River preparing the boat and learning everything we can about river life, locking and navagating. We will be adding new electronics as it seems everything that came with "Just Us" has broken or didn't work correctly to begin with. New term to us "BOAT" --Bring Out Another Thousand.

Welcome to our website. We are Ken & Darcy Searl from Roswell, Georgia. "Just Us" is the name of our 1989 4207 Carver Aft Cabin Motoryacht. This website chronicles day by day the events that took place over the 305 days we traveled on the Great Loop. Please feel free to read and enjoy our journals.

We are currently docked at Goose Pond Colony Marina in Scottsboro, Alabama on the Tennessee River. We will give you a short version of our travels below so you can see the route we took and places we visited. We began our wonderful boating adventure "The Great Loop" on October 2005 from Chattanooga, TN. after purchasing "Just Us" and outfitting her for the long adventure. We were considered "Newbees" at the beginning but it didn't take long to get over that. Our travels took us down the Tennessee River to the Tombigbee Waterway to Mobile Bay.

We had the pleasure of stopping along the way in various marinas and visiting the towns and meeting other "Loopers". The Intercoastal Waterway was our highway of travel and we ventured to all the towns in the Florida Panhandle, including Destin, Panama City, Apalachicola and Carrabelle. From there we crossed the Gulf of Mexico at night, which was a total different experience, to Tarpon Springs, Florida. Then onto Key West. Keep in mind we went home several times and traveled slowly to take in all the sights along the way. We made Key West in January, 2006. From there we ventured up the East Coast of Florida, stopping in Miami and then Ft.Lauderdale. Our next new experience took us across the great Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean to West End, Bahamas In February 2006 where we met up with other Loopers who helped us chart our way to the Abaco Islands, Bahamas. We really enjoyed our experience in the Islands. Back to the U.S. in late March for a trip home and then continued up the East Coast stopping and sightseeing in many great towns. Our adventure took us up through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and the Chesepeake Bay to the Delaware Bay and New Jersey. June 9 found us out in the Atlantic Ocean to New York Harbor past the Statue of Liberty and up the Hudson River. Never before in our lifetime would we have thought that we would pass the Statue of Liberty in our own boat. What a day that was.

As we traveled up the Hudson River it started raining and more rain and more rain until the river was at flood stage. The flooding forced us to stop in New York in late June and put the boat up in storage for 10 months. The Erie Canal Locks were damaged in the flood and wouldn't be repaired in time for us to continue our jouney. So we stopped and went home to wait until next Spring to continue.

May 2007 we returned to the boat, unwrapped it, a week of work and packed it up to continue on our journey. Thru the Erie Canal to Lake Ontario and into Canada. Meeting new folks and Loopers is always a pleasure and we had fun.

Next was the 250 miles of the Trent Severn Waterway and onto the Georgian Bay. Some of the most beautiful sights you can imagine. We spent most of July and August in Canada and then worked our way down Lake Michigan to Chicago by Labor Day. Wouldn't you know it, rain and more rain, then flooding began. Can't seem to get away from it. We were delayed on the Illinois River for almost a week but finally continued the Illinois, Missippi and Ohio River to connect with our great Tennessee River. We crossed our wake on September 12, 2007 to finally complete The Great Loop.

We traveled over 7,500 miles and 305 days on the boat. Since our return we have made several small trips to various places and this fall we plan on traveling to Florida for the 2009-2010 Winter. We will keep this site updated as we travel, so look for our next adventure under the "Other Travels" link.

This website was made possible by our son, Michael Breaux. We will be updating this website as often as possible for our friends and family to follow us on our adventure.
